6 Ways to Make Injectable Results Last Longer

Injectable treatments will need maintenance throughout the year, but there are a few things you can be doing immediately after treatment and in between appointments to make your results last longer! Here’s what you can do to extend the effects of injectables between clinic visits...

Immediately after treatment

First and foremost, please ensure you are following the advice & aftercare instructions given by your practitioner at the time of your appointment! This advice will be tailored to your particular treatment and unique skin, so it's very important to take note of what you're advised in clinic.

Generally speaking, after any injectable treatment you should avoid touching the area as this can spread bacteria around injection sites. We also recommend keeping the skin clear of any products or make up, and staying away from swimming pools, saunas and physical exercise for at least 24 hours, unless otherwise advised.

Stay hydrated

⁠Drinking plenty of water not only keeps your skin healthy, but also helps maintain your treatments. Hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient of dermal fillers, is hydrophilic which essentially means the molecule attracts copious amounts of water. Keeping hydrated following a dermal filler treatment will help to enhance the effects of dermal fillers, preserving a plump and voluminous look to the injected area.

Avoid caffeine

Yes, unfortunately, the people's favourite beverage is off-limits for the first few days after treatment! Caffeine can cause swelling and bruising to worsen, so its best avoided before & after your treatment.

This applies across all injectable treatments, but especially when it comes to lip enhancements. When you’ve had caffeine recently, your blood vessels are dilated, including in your lips. Filler

Tear trough fillers are a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment. It involves numbing the tear trough area with a topical anaesthetic and then injecting the area with hyaluronic acid gel, which works to boost collagen production and replace the lost volume brought about through the ageing process.

However, not everyone is suitable for filler under the eyes due to the delicate nature of the skin in this area. While carefully-placed fillers can replace lost volume and hollowing and a more instant result, they do not improve the skin health which is often the main cause of concerns in the eye area.

What are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides play a critical role in anti-ageing, in part due to their ability to retain water, their moisturising capabilities, and their ability to restore the skin. Polynucleotides do more than simply deliver additional hydration to the skin, and as biostimulators, they instead act more like a medicine or food for skin cells, which promotes the production of elastin and collagen.

Polynucleotides are able to connect with a number of different cell receptors and promote a range of reactions, including attracting stem cells to repair and improve the quality of skin tissue. They are also able to tangibly improve the extracellular matrix and have anti-inflammatory properties which protect against free radicals and support an increased number of fibroblasts.

What are Polynucleotides Made From?

Polynucleotides are biopolymers, which are made from fish DNA fragments that have been extracted from trout or salmon sperm due to their resemblance to human DNA.

Ameela Polynucleotides

Ameela is an innovative, non-invasive treatment that uses polynucleotides to restore skin firmness and elasticity whilst also ensuring that the skin is properly protected against free radicals and cellular damage. Ameela also results in improved oxygen and blood vessel supplies as well as the promotion of healthy tissue regeneration.

Ameela Vs. Other Injectable Aesthetic Treatments

Ameela differs from other injectable treatments, such as Profhilo, in that it is a polynucleotide bio-stimulant rather than a hyaluronic based hydrator. Notably, Ameela is proven to prolong the activity of hyaluronic acid by up to 40% and can be used in conjunction with a variety of other aesthetic treatments to further improve outcomes.

Ameela is suitable for all skin types, however, due to its formulation, this treatment is not suitable for those with allergies to fish or shellfish.

Types of Ameela Treatments

Ameela is suitable for a range of treatment areas, including the neck, hands, décolletage, underarms, knees, abdomen, and deep tear trough. Using a 1.5% concentration of polynucleotides, this formulation promotes the bio-reconstruction of the deep tissues around the eye area to improve superficial wrinkles without the need for fillers and provide a natural, youthful and well-rested appearance.

Ameela Rejuvenation is formulated with a 2% concentration of polynucleotides and uses its unique bio-stimulation process to boost skin elasticity, minimise the appearance of wrinkles and provide noticeable tightening and contouring on the face, neck and décolletage.

Ameela Face/Strong is formulated with a 2.5% concentration of polynucleotides and is designed to treat the jawline and scalp where its stem cell growth promotion abilities can support hair growth. Ameela can also be used to thicken eyebrows when used as a supplementary procedure.

How to care for your skin under your mask

Masks are now a part of our everyday lives, as a Nurse I am pretty used to wearing a mask anyway but it still feels a little strange popping to the local shops in one.

Myself and my colleagues in medical aesthetics have experienced an increase in the number of patients reporting skin changes since they have been wearing a mask regularly in particular, more breakouts, a condition known as "Maskne"

So what is Maskne?

The medical term for Maskne is “Acne Mechanica” a skin condition that is brought on by prolonged wear of personal protective equipment on the face. The close contact of masks with our skin in combination with a warm moist environment between our skin and the mask can cause breakouts, skin irritation, acne and soreness.

Is maskne different to acne?

Acne occurs in the sebaceous follicle which is a large sebacceous gland hormones increase the size of the gland leading to increased sebum production, pores become blocked and can trap Propionibacterium Acne (P.Acne) bacteria, causing acne.

Maskne has a mechanical cause, multiple contact points between our skin and the mask causing a build up of warmth, sweat and friction which in turn leads to inflammation that can block pores and lead to breakouts.

While we all have to wear masks, what can people do to minimise the chances of getting maske?

Changing your disposable mask regularly and washing your reusable masks.

If you feel you have to wear makeup go light! Heavy makeup increases the chances of clogged pores and breakouts.

What treatments, products and ingredients should people be thinking about to help clear it up?

Cleanse your skin twice a day for my patients I recommend Obagi Clenziderm Foaming Wash with 2% salicylic acid (Hero ingredient) which helps unclog pores and washes away dead skin cells.

Use an exfoliator at least three times a week, Obagi Clenziderm Pore Therapy Toner is a chemical exfoliator and is gentler on the skin than scrubs. A good exfoliator reduces sebum production, pore size and blackheads, this product is incredible I use it everyday!

Hydrate your skin! Oily skin needs moisture too, you are replacing the water not oil. Use Obagi Hydrate twice a day or as often as your skin needs it.

COVID-19 CLINIC UPDATE

I hope you’re all keeping well during the current restrictions due to Corona Virus, I am currently following government advice and my clinic is closed. I promise I will be straight back out there as soon as I am able.

SOME SELF CARE

I thought I would just tell a few things I have been doing to try and keep my mind focused and look after my mental health during this period of isolation.

I am continuing to work on my business, I have attended some online training courses and I am planning some fantastic treats for you all when clinic reopens. I am trying to have some sort of routine everyday which is helping me focus on what I need to do, I found that I was watching the news pretty much constantly so I now try and limit my exposure to news sources just watching in the morning or evening.

KEEP UP WITH YOUR SKINCARE

Even though we’re not leaving the house as often as we were or would like! It’s still important to look after your skin, in fact now is a perfect time to get your skincare on point.

Every good basic skincare routine should start with a cleanser, toner and a moisturiser. Cleansing is the first and most important step in your routine as it removes impurities from the skin and creating a clean surface to compliment the rest of the products you use.

I use the Obagi® Foaming Gel cleanser followed by the Nuderm toner. Your toner should not concern alcohol as this dehydrates the skin. The Obagi® toner balances the natural pH of the skin.
